OTC Medications to Avoid While Taking Amoxicillin

Avoid taking antacids containing aluminum or magnesium while on amoxicillin. These can reduce amoxicillin’s absorption, lessening its effectiveness. Space your amoxicillin and antacid doses by at least two hours.

Medications that interact with amoxicillin

Methotrexate’s toxicity increases when combined with amoxicillin; avoid concurrent use. Similarly, oral contraceptives may have reduced efficacy; consider alternative birth control methods during your amoxicillin course. Warfarin’s blood-thinning effect might be intensified by amoxicillin; monitor your INR closely. Always inform your doctor or pharmacist of all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements, before starting amoxicillin.

Probenecid, used to treat gout, interacts negatively with amoxicillin. Concurrent use prolongs amoxicillin’s half-life in the body. Consult your doctor before using both medications simultaneously.
