Potential Side Effects and Drug Interactions of Ciprofloxacin

Ciprofloxacin, while effective, can cause side effects. Common ones include nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting. Less frequent but more serious reactions involve tendonitis or tendon rupture, especially in older adults or those taking corticosteroids.

Allergic reactions ranging from mild skin rash to life-threatening anaphylaxis are possible. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, or hives.

Drug interactions are a concern. Ciprofloxacin can interact with antacids, calcium supplements, and multivitamins, reducing its absorption. Therefore, separate administration by at least two hours is advised.

It’s also known to interact with certain blood thinners, increasing bleeding risk. Consult your doctor about all medications, supplements, and herbal remedies you are taking before starting ciprofloxacin.

Monitor for any unusual symptoms and report them to your doctor immediately. This information does not substitute professional medical advice. Always discuss your treatment plan with your healthcare provider.
