Potential Side Effects and Precautions

Doxycycline can cause nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Drink plenty of water to mitigate these effects. Sun sensitivity is common; use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and wear protective clothing when outdoors.

Medication Interactions

Inform your doctor about all medications you’re taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements. Certain antibiotics, like doxycycline, can interact negatively with some birth control pills, reducing their effectiveness. Discuss alternative birth control methods with your doctor if necessary. Doxycycline can also interact with antacids, so take them at least two hours apart.

Other Potential Side Effects

Less common, but possible side effects include yeast infections, dizziness, and changes in bowel movements. Severe allergic reactions, though rare, require immediate medical attention. These reactions may manifest as swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing, or hives. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of these symptoms.
