Doxycycline-induced sun sensitivity varies greatly. Some experience mild redness and burning, while others develop severe sunburn with blistering. The intensity depends on individual factors like skin type and the amount of sun exposure.
Duration is equally variable. Sun sensitivity usually begins within a few days of starting doxycycline and may persist for several days after the medication is stopped. For some, the increased sensitivity might last longer, potentially up to several weeks. Always consult your doctor if sensitivity is prolonged or unusually severe.
Minimize sun exposure while taking doxycycline. This includes using broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, wearing protective clothing like long sleeves and hats, and seeking shade, especially during peak sun hours (10 am to 4 pm). These precautions significantly reduce the risk and severity of sunburn. Regularly apply sunscreen, even on cloudy days.
If sunburn develops, treat it with cool compresses and soothing lotions. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage discomfort. Severe burns warrant medical attention.
