Choose the pill type that best suits your needs. Many options exist, each with its own hormone balance and schedule.
Combined Pills
Combined pills contain both estrogen and progestin. These are the most common type and are highly effective when taken correctly. Brands vary in hormone dosage, so discuss options with your doctor to find the best fit. Expect regular periods, usually lighter than normal. Side effects can include breast tenderness, mood changes, or nausea, but often lessen over time.
Progestin-Only Pills (Minipills)
Minipills contain only progestin. They’re a good option for women who can’t take estrogen, such as breastfeeding mothers or those with certain medical conditions. Unlike combined pills, these need to be taken at the same time each day. Irregular bleeding is more common with minipills.
Extended-Cycle Pills
These pills offer fewer periods. Some brands allow for periods only four times a year. This might appeal to women who prefer less frequent menstruation. Remember to discuss potential side effects and suitability with your doctor.
