When to Consult a Doctor

Contact your doctor immediately if your herpes symptoms worsen or don’t improve after 7-10 days of taking aciclovir. This includes increased pain, new lesions, or spread of the infection.

Severe Symptoms Requiring Immediate Medical Attention

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following: high fever (over 102°F or 39°C), severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, vision changes, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or signs of a serious infection such as swelling or pus.

Additionally, consult your doctor before starting aciclovir if you have kidney problems, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are taking other medications, particularly immunosuppressants. Your physician can assess your specific situation and determine the best course of action.
