When to seek immediate medical attention while on doxycycline

Contact your doctor or seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following:

Severe allergic reaction: This includes difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, hives, or severe skin rash. Call emergency services immediately. Signs of liver damage: These can include yellowing of your skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, light-colored stools, or persistent nausea and vomiting. Prompt medical attention is necessary. Signs of esophageal irritation: Difficulty or pain swallowing, chest pain, or persistent heartburn warrant immediate medical evaluation. Do not delay seeking help. Severe abdominal pain: Intense or persistent abdominal pain, especially accompanied by fever or bloody diarrhea, requires immediate medical attention. Signs of pseudotumor cerebri (increased intracranial pressure): This can manifest as severe headaches, blurred vision, or double vision. Seek medical assistance quickly. Sudden and unexplained bleeding or bruising: If you experience unusual bleeding or bruising while taking doxycycline, contact your doctor or seek emergency care immediately.

Other reasons to contact your doctor:

Persistent diarrhea: If diarrhea persists for more than a few days, contact your physician. Medication side effects not listed here: Report any unusual or concerning side effects to your doctor.

Doxycycline and Sun Sensitivity:

Doxycycline can increase your sun sensitivity. Use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and wear protective clothing when you are outdoors. Avoid prolonged sun exposure, especially during peak sun hours (10 am to 4 pm). Seek medical attention if you develop a severe sunburn.

Remember to always follow your doctor’s instructions and take doxycycline as prescribed. This information is not a substitute for professional medical advice. Always consult with your healthcare provider for any health concerns.
