Preparing the Reglan IV Solution

Always use a sterile technique. Begin by withdrawing the prescribed dose of Metoclopramide (Reglan) from its vial. Use a sterile syringe and needle appropriate for the volume. Next, carefully draw up the correct amount of compatible diluent, typically normal saline (0.9% NaCl) or dextrose 5% in water (D5W). Consult your institution’s formulary for specific compatibility information.

Dilution Considerations

The concentration of the final solution depends on the patient’s weight and the recommended dosage. Common dilutions range from 5 mg/mL to 10 mg/mL. Slowly inject the diluent into the Reglan vial, gently swirling to ensure complete mixing. Avoid vigorous shaking to prevent foaming. Visually inspect the solution for particulate matter or discoloration before administration. If any abnormalities are present, discard the solution.

Once mixed, the solution should be administered immediately or stored according to your facility’s protocols. Never use a solution that shows signs of degradation or has exceeded its stability timeframe.
