Common Side Effects and How to Manage Them

Amoxicillin, while generally safe, can cause some side effects in babies. Knowing what to expect and how to address them can ease your concerns.

Digestive Issues

Diarrhea: Offer your baby plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. If diarrhea is severe or persistent (lasting more than 24 hours), contact your pediatrician. Vomiting: Give small, frequent sips of clear fluids like water or electrolyte solutions. Avoid giving solid foods until vomiting subsides. If vomiting persists, consult your doctor. Constipation: Increase your baby’s fluid intake and consider adding more fruits and vegetables to their diet (if applicable). If constipation is severe, talk to your doctor.

Skin Reactions

Rash: A mild rash is possible. Monitor the rash. If it worsens, spreads significantly, or your baby seems uncomfortable, contact your pediatrician immediately. This could indicate an allergic reaction.

Other Potential Side Effects

Thrush (oral yeast infection): This is a fungal infection of the mouth and often appears as white patches. Your doctor can prescribe an antifungal medication. Fever: A low-grade fever is sometimes a side effect. Monitor your baby’s temperature and give acetaminophen or ibuprofen as directed by your doctor, if needed. A high fever requires immediate medical attention.

When to Call the Doctor

Contact your pediatrician immediately if your baby experiences: severe diarrhea, persistent vomiting, difficulty breathing, significant rash, high fever, or any other concerning symptoms. Early intervention is key.
