Diaper Rash: Causes and Symptoms

Diaper rash, a common irritation, often presents as redness and inflammation on a baby’s bottom. Several factors contribute to its development.

Prolonged exposure to wet or soiled diapers: Urine and stool contain irritants that can damage delicate skin. Friction and chafing: Movement inside the diaper creates friction, exacerbating irritation. Infections: Yeast (Candida) or bacteria can cause more severe rashes, appearing bright red, sometimes with satellite lesions. Allergic reactions: Certain detergents, soaps, lotions, or diaper materials can trigger allergic contact dermatitis. Sensitivity to certain foods: A baby’s diet can sometimes influence diaper rash severity.

Recognizing the symptoms is key to effective treatment. Look for:

Redness, usually on the buttocks, inner thighs, and genitals. Small, raised bumps or blisters. Scaly or cracked skin. Possible pus-filled blisters or sores (indicating infection). Unusual odor.

If the rash is severe, spreads beyond the diaper area, shows signs of infection, or doesn’t improve within a few days of home treatment, consult a pediatrician immediately.
