Understanding Sildenafil Citrate

Sildenafil citrate is the active ingredient in Figral and many other erectile dysfunction medications. It works by increasing blood flow to the penis, facilitating an erection in response to sexual stimulation.

This improved blood flow is achieved by inhibiting an enzyme called phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5). PDE5 normally breaks down a molecule called cyclic GMP, which plays a key role in penile erection. By blocking PDE5, sildenafil allows cyclic GMP levels to remain elevated, thus promoting vasodilation and facilitating improved blood flow.

Sildenafil’s effects are contingent upon sexual stimulation; it doesn’t directly cause erections. The medication enhances the body’s natural response to sexual arousal.

Dosage varies, typically ranging from 25mg to 100mg, and should always be determined by a healthcare professional considering individual health factors. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully.

Common side effects include headache, flushing, nasal congestion, and visual disturbances. Serious side effects are rare, but seek immediate medical attention if you experience chest pain, sudden vision loss, or prolonged erection (priapism).

Sildenafil interacts with certain medications, including nitrates. Always inform your doctor of all medications and supplements you are taking before starting sildenafil.

Consult your doctor before using sildenafil, especially if you have heart problems, high or low blood pressure, or liver or kidney disease.
